Who would have known that a 1969 Fiat that Tim Leatherman and his wife purchased for $300 to travel around Europe would be a cherished part of the Leatherman comany's lore.  Inspired by that cranky car during that trip, Tim, an engineer, conceived of the Pocket Survival Tool (PST).  A couple of years later, the PST began to take shape in Tim's basement.  Fortunately, Tim, being an engineer and not a machinist, got help from his brother-in-law to teach him the machinist skills he needed. 

After considering various options, Tim's vision of combining full-size pliers with a pocket knife came to fruition. It then occured to Tim that others might want to have such a tool, a Leatherman Tool.

The tool was called Mr. Crunch. However, no one wanted to buy his invention. Knife companies thought is was a tool and tool companies thought it was a knife.  It wasn't until 1983 when two mail-order businesses placed modest orders.  One of the mail order companies put Tim's (and college friend Steve Berliner's) product on the back cover in time for Christmas and they had to reorder several times.  Sales began to grow and Leatherman successfully introduced the Mini-Tool, the company's second product. 

Leatherman managed to stay ahead of the competition by introducing bigger and beefier versions of the original concept and adding more features and locking blades.  Leatherman learned quickly that bigger doesn't always mean better.  By introducing the Leatherman Micra, they found their catagory's top seller.  In 1998, Leatherman introduced what is now their most popular product, the Leatherman Wave.  

A few years after that, Leatherman introduced the Leatherman Juice  line, which emphasises functionality with style.  Now over 400 employees work with Tim and Steve to introduce new designs using premium materials to increase value to the consumer, and you guessed it, they are from Oregon too.
